Beaujolais Nouveau 2011: The New, the Cru & the Gang of Four
Thursday, November 17th, 4:30pm – 10pm
Bastille Café & Bar will be toasting the New, the Cru & the Gang of Four on Thursday, the 17th of November. Naturally, we’ll be pouring Beaujolais Nouveau ($3 taste, $6/gl, $20 carafe), and we’ll also feature the wines of the Gang of Four, a group of the best producers in Beaujolais all of whom are proponents of natural wine making.
What is natural wine making, you ask, and why do I want it in my Beaujolais? The idea is simple: nurture the vine, take great care of your grapes, and stay outta the way in the winery! These are clean, fresh, bright exemplars of the Gamay grape, delivering an uncommon vibrancy and energy.
We’ll also feature additional producers of Cru Beaujolais, which come from the 10 best villages and, in the right hands, are full of mineral essence and great structure. This is a great way to see, via comparison with fun-n-fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, what the appellation is capable of. You’ll also have a chance to compare vintages (2009 being widely thought of as one of the greatest vintages in the history of the region).
Featured Gang of Four producers:
Jean Foillard Cuvée Corcelette, Morgon, 2009 (90 year old gamay vines)
Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py, 2009 from 3L
Marcel Lapierre Morgon, 2007 from Magnum
Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes, 2010 (70 year old gamay vines)
Executive Chef Jason Stoneburner will be offering selections of charcuterie, perfect for noshing with Beaujolais, in addition to other inspired Nouveau treats.
